Short-legged Svalbard reindeer grazing on summer tundra near Longyearbyen

Short answer

Svalbard wildlife day tours out of Longyearbyen reliably deliver Svalbard reindeer, Arctic fox, seabird colonies in summer and, from the water, seals, walrus haul-outs and beluga. They do not deliver polar bears. Seven real listings run from about $165 for a wildlife and polar plunge outing to multi-day camping expeditions where bears become a genuine possibility rather than a marketing line.

This is the category where the search demand and the reality are furthest apart. More people search for polar bear tours in Svalbard than for anything else on this site, and the honest answer is that a four-hour van safari from Longyearbyen is not going to produce one. That is worth saying plainly at the top rather than burying.

What Svalbard does have, in quantity and at close range, is a wildlife assemblage that exists almost nowhere else: a reindeer subspecies with short legs and no natural fear of people, Arctic fox in both colour phases, bird cliffs that hold tens of thousands of birds through the summer, and marine mammals in the fjord. A good wildlife guide here is worth the money because they know where those things were yesterday.

What to know before you book

Minimum distance from a polar bear300 metres by law, rising to 500 metres from 1 March to 30 June. If a bear approaches, you are required to move away.
Minimum distance from a walrus haul-out500 metres, under the environmental rules that took effect on 1 January 2025.
DronesBanned in Longyearbyen, within 5 km of the airport, in all protected areas, and near bird cliffs from 1 April to 31 August. Leave it at home.
Feeding or approachingProhibited for all wildlife. The reindeer's indifference to people is not an invitation.
BinocularsThe single most useful thing to bring. Most of what you see here you see at distance, by law and by circumstance.
Protected landSixty-five per cent of Svalbard is protected, with group-size limits and landing restrictions inside the reserves. It is usually the boundary, not the terrain, that turns a tour around.

Why we will not sell you a polar bear day tour

Common questions

Can you see polar bears on a Svalbard day tour?

No. Polar bears follow the sea ice, which is generally far from Longyearbyen, and seeing one realistically takes days on a vessel in remote fjords or at the ice edge. Norwegian law also requires you to stay 300 metres away, or 500 metres between 1 March and 30 June. Day tours from town deliver reindeer, Arctic fox, seabirds and marine mammals instead.

What wildlife will I actually see in Svalbard?

Svalbard reindeer are close to certain, because they graze at the edge of town and have almost no fear of people. Arctic fox is a realistic maybe on any guided outing. From late May to mid-August the seabird cliffs are extraordinary and impossible to miss. From a boat, seals are likely, and beluga and walrus are both possible.

Why are Svalbard reindeer so small?

They are a distinct subspecies that has been isolated here for thousands of years, with short legs, a stocky build and no large land predator to run from. That last part is why they let you walk past. They are also seasonal in shape, putting on remarkable fat reserves before winter and looking almost spherical by autumn.

Do I need binoculars for a Svalbard wildlife tour?

More than almost anywhere. Legal minimum distances, open terrain and cliff colonies mean most of what you see is at range. A pair of 8x42 binoculars transforms the day, and a long lens transforms the photographs. Some listings offer tripod rental, but nobody supplies binoculars as standard.

Can I fly a drone to film Svalbard wildlife?

No, in practice. Drones are banned in Longyearbyen, within 5 km of the airport, in every protected area, and within 500 metres of bird cliffs from 1 April to 31 August. Given that protected areas cover 65 per cent of the archipelago, there is very little legal airspace left. Leave it behind.
